If you haven’t looked at mattresses in a few years, you’re in for a treat.

“The technology has really changed,” said Emory Tallent, manager of MattressMax Superstore on Chatillon Road in Rome. “You need to purchase a bed geared exactly to how you sleep, and these days you can.”

From latex to memory foam to coils, the Englander mattress outlet offers a wide range of mix-and-match choices — all manufactured right onsite.

Established in 1894, Englander is the oldest brand on the market and the Spears family’s plant in Rome has been part of its history for the past four generations.

In recent years, there’s been a concerted effort to use eco-friendly materials such as bamboo, silk, cashmere and organic cottons.

“We’re getting away from petroleum-based beds and using more natural products,” Tallent said. “It’s not as easy as you’d think, but as time progresses, the shift to renewable resources is growing.”

The Synergy and Nature’s Finest lines, for example, use botanical latex from the sap of rubber trees.

The mattresses conform to the body’s shape for support in any sleeping position and a unique pinhole design makes them cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

The Nature’s Finest Organic line adds certified organic cotton and New Zealand wool for a chemical-free sleeping environment.

Among the other choices include the Tension Ease pocket coil line; Lady Englander; Nature’s Spirit and the ViscoPedic memory foam line that uses visco-elastic developed by NASA for extra durability, resiliency and comfort.

“Each category is a different kind of bed, and each category is available in four levels of firmness,” Tallent said.

Side sleepers typically do well with softer mattresses, while those who sleep on their backs often opt for firmer ones — but it’s all a matter of personal preference.

At MattressMax, you can get guidance from the experts and then test out the offerings for yourself.

“You need to shut down every day to rejuvenate,” Tallent said. “Our sleep is one of the most important things we do, and a lot of people don’t give it the attention it deserves.”
