At the Highlands Literacy and Learning Center, students have been fighting the “summer slide” by participating in the center’s annual summer camp.
“The activities that we do in the summer camp are all STEAM related activities,” Executive Director Bonnie Potts said. “This week has been space theme. So, they have been making all sorts of crafts like rockets and Mars land rovers. We partnered with The Bascom and the children painted pictures that were their own galaxy. They have also walked to Mill Creek and picked up some ‘moon rocks.’ They are doing a lot of cool things.”
For those that need a little remediation during the summer, The Literacy and Learning Center is the place to go, Potts said.
“I think our summer camp is really helpful, so these kids don’t get into the summer slide,” Potts said. “We keep it fun, and the kids really enjoy it.”
Throughout the month, Ben the Reading Dog shows up to help kids learn how to read confidently.
“Kay Neslage brings her licensed therapy dog, Ben, a lot of days and the kids love it,” Potts said. “There are a lot of kids who struggle reading out loud because they get embarrassed. That is where Ben comes in. The children read out loud to him and usually they are fighting over who can read to him next.”
The Literacy and Learning Center summer camp is scheduled throughout the month of July and is free for any kid.
