The Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce hosted their annual “Cashiers Spirit of Our Community Awards” at Micas Mountain Kitchen on Thursday, Nov. 13. The event honored six different individuals or organizations in the Cashiers area that embody the word “spirit”.
Guests enjoyed live music, food and drinks in a cozy setting at Micas’ Firefly Bar. Board President Ashton Harris and Executive Director Susan Sapienza presented the awards, which were chosen by a selection committee.
“The Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to recognize individuals whose actions speak louder than words. Our Community Spirit Award winners give selflessly, serve joyfully and inspire all of us to build a stronger, more connected Cashiers,” said Harris.
The first award presented was Businessperson of the Year, which went to Mike “Goose” Geisler and his wife, Emma, of Ace Handyman Services. Sapienza emphasized that the two demonstrated how running a business can go hand in hand with giving back to the community.
“From sponsoring the Christmas Parade to raising funds for hurricane relief and volunteering their time for local projects — they lead with generosity and integrity,” said Sapienza.
The Volunteer of the Year award was presented to Glenville-Cashiers Rescue Squad Chief Jeff Stewart, whose role is voluntary yet carries great responsibility to ensure the safety of local residents.
“He has trained countless EMTs and first responders, led through storms, searches and rescues and done it all with humility and compassion,” said Sapienza.
The Chamber presented its Educator of the Year award to Andrea Chalker, principal of Summit Charter School. Sapienza noted that Chalker helped expand Summit to K-12 and raised academic standards.
“She’s the principal who stands in the rain at the carpool, chaperones overnight trips and keeps the spirit of Summit strong. Andrea reminds us that leadership and love can absolutely go hand in hand,” said Sapienza.
The Arts & Culture Advocate of the Year award was given to Betty Morris, who dedicated years to leading the Cashiers Valley Community Chorus, and now the Cashiers Valley Youth Chorus.
“Her free concerts have become beloved traditions, and her outreach to seniors and music programs keeps Cashiers humming year-round. Betty’s joy is contagious,” said Sapienza.
The Evergreen Award, which is presented to an individual, business or other organization whose work reflects the respect of natural resources and the value of sustainability, was awarded to Kyle Pursel.
“He brings curiosity, knowledge and contagious enthusiasm to everything he does. He’s the kind of guy who makes you fall in love with nature all over again, and then hands you a pair of gloves so you can help protect it,” said Sapienza.
The final award presented was for Citizen of the Year. Serenity Richards, the Albert Carlton-Cashiers Community Library branch librarian, was honored for her vision, innovation, and leadership.
“For 15 years, she has led the Albert Carlton-Cashiers Library with grace, intelligence and compassion — making it a welcoming space for children, families and lifelong learners,” said Sapienza.
This year’s honorees will be highlighted at the 51st annual Cashiers Christmas Parade on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 3 p.m.
