The first dance of the spring series of live-music community events will be hosted by the Macon County Public Library on Thursday, March 19, at 6:30 p.m. Contra dance is a form of social folk dancing from which square dancing evolved, sharing many of the same movements. No partner is necessary, generations mix, all are welcome—including beginners—and no dance experience or special attire is required.
The featured band for March is the duo of George Paul and Amelia Morgan. Paul is recognized as one of the premier musicians for contra dances throughout the Southeast and is a core member of several bands, including Playing with Fyre. He has played piano since age 3 and composed many tunes. Morgan is primarily a fiddler, also skilled on guitar, mandolin and tenor banjo. She plays several genres and studied bluegrass at East Tennessee State University. Both have produced several CDs.
Harrison Keely, a community favorite, will call the dance. For those unfamiliar, the caller walks dancers through the steps before the music begins, then continues to call the moves in time to the music. Dances may include contras, squares, mixers and other folk styles, depending on the experience level of attendees. Keely also acts in theater productions in Hayesville and is known for his clear instructions, enthusiasm and permanent smile.
Beginners are encouraged to arrive by 6:30 p.m. for instruction. The dance runs from 7 to 9 p.m. A suggested donation of $10 to $20 per person helps pay the band, caller, flyers and, when needed, the venue and sound technician. Children age 14 and under are free. Children over age 8 who wish to participate, or sit and watch with an adult, may also attend.
The Macon County Public Library is at 149 Siler Farm Road in Franklin, N.C.
Participants are encouraged to bring a closed water container and a snack. Smooth-soled shoes are recommended for dancing on wood floors. Attendees are asked not to wear perfume or scented products.
