On Thursday, Jan. 29, the Highlands Community Child Development Center announced that longtime Executive Director Pat Hedden will be succeeded by Assistant Director Demitra Passmore, with Hedden transitioning into a new role as founding director.
HCCDC Board President Diane Dickey led the transition ceremony, offering words of appreciation for Hedden’s time as executive director.
“Pat’s deep understanding of and response to the needs of families have been central to fulfilling our mission: providing affordable, high-quality preschool care and early childhood education for working families,” said Dickey.
Under Hedden’s leadership, the HCCDC transformed from a small daycare serving 25 children to one with a capacity of 90. She also helped plan a standalone facility separate from the Church of the Incarnation building and coordinated the opening of two Pre-K classrooms.
“Her unwavering commitment has established the gold standard for childcare in our area, making a lasting impact on countless children and families,” said Dickey.
As founding director, Hedden will draw on her deep understanding of the center’s needs to steer the HCCDC toward continued success.
“Being named the founding director has been very special to me,” said Hedden. “As I transition into my retirement, I just want you to know that this has been a huge part of my life and I’m enjoying my work.”
Dickey also expressed confidence in Passmore, highlighting her unwavering dedication as both a former teacher and, for the past five years, the center’s assistant director. She was instrumental in working through numerous regulations to ensure state certification for the two Pre-K classrooms.
Hedden mentored Passmore during her tenure as assistant director. As the new executive director, she will oversee day-to-day operations and guide strategic initiatives.
“Her outstanding communication skills and eagerness to share her knowledge with others are a tremendous asset to HCCDC,” said Dickey. “These qualities help cultivate a supportive and well-informed workplace, ensuring that all team members feel valued and empowered to contribute to our shared mission.”
Passmore thanked staff members for their consistent support and passion. She voiced appreciation to the children, families and board of directors for making the HCDCC so special.
“I care deeply about the center and our mission, and my goal is simple: to continue building a safe, nurturing and high quality environment where children thrive, families feel supported and our staff feel valued,” said Passmore. “Thank you all for believing in me.”
Dickey presented gifts and flowers to Hedden and Passmore. Guests enjoyed a variety of sweets and drinks following the ceremony’s conclusion.
