Join Hemlock Restoration Initiative in Nantahala National Forest near Highlands for a hemlock treatment volunteer workday on Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Hemlock trees are an essential and irreplaceable part of western North Carolina’s forests, but for over 20 years, they’ve been under threat from the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA)—an invasive insect that can kill hemlocks in our region in as little as four years.
Help protect these hemlocks from HWA at the beautiful Van Hook Glade Campground along the Cullasaja River and Cliffside Lake – a great spot for someone wanting to treat hemlocks on the more accessible terrain of a campground.
Volunteers will be working with insecticide and moving through the forest off trail. Every volunteer will be paired with an experienced, licensed professional who will provide instruction and guidance. Volunteers under 18 and pets are not permitted at this event.
Registration is required. To register, fill out the form at savehemlocksnc.org by Monday, Nov. 3 at 3 p.m. More details about meeting location and what to bring will be provided after registration. Reach out to Ayla at volunteer@savehemlocksnc.org or (828) 252-4783 with any questions.
