Cashiers Area Chamber showcases recent renovations at open house
The Highlander and other local newspapers and magazines are proudly displayed at the entrance of the newly-renovated visitor center. Sapienza compared the entrance to that of a hotel upon checking in.
After about 14 months of planning and construction, the Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce showcased its newly-renovated Cashiers Area Chamber and Visitors Center to the public during its March 19 open house.
The building underwent renovations thanks to the support of the Jackson County Tourism Development Authority, who provided $10,000 in grant support, along with donated exterior painting, gutter installation and interior expertise from Miguel Mireles of Mireles Landscaping and Service and Alex Denis of Alex’s Seamless Gutters. The Chamber also funded additional behind-the-scenes upgrades, including the replacement of upstairs windows.
“There was some deferred maintenance and attention that needed to be done to the building,” said Executive Director Susan Sapienza. “But more importantly, we wanted to create a more welcoming atmosphere for our visitors and our members and residents who pop in.”
The visitor center, Chamber office and upstairs space all underwent renovations. Inside, the floors were refinished and fresh paint was added to brighten the space. Old furniture was replaced, and traditional literature racks were swapped for ultralight, clear wall-mounted displays, creating easier access and organization based on “the way a visitor might think.”
The stone fireplace was removed, and farm tables replaced traditional desks. Artwork from independent artists on Etsy decorates the walls, and a new community space was added upstairs for the Chamber’s ELEVATE program, workshops and other business meetings.
“We are trying to be supportive of our businesses in house as well. We’ve always had the business after hours and the events in the community, which we’re going to continue to do,” said Sapienza, “But having that community space upstairs allows a place for our members to come and have that informal meeting or get together for our board to have their regular meetings.”
Guests who attended the open house toured the building while learning about upcoming Chamber programs and Cashiers411, a calendar aimed at informing business and community leaders about workshops, networking events and initiatives supporting the growth of local businesses.
“We are thrilled with the new improvements of the Chamber of Commerce building,” said Board of Directors President Sarah Jennings. “Susan and Heather had a wonderful vision for bringing the visitor experience to a new level and have executed it beautifully. We look forward to welcoming visitors to our new space all season long.”
Sapienza now has her sights set on new technology as the Chamber awaits further funding. One potential tool is the Apolosign Smart Portable TV, which converts to a whiteboard, allowing for improved meeting and workshop experiences.
