Nominations have opened for the Cashiers Historic Society’s Village Heritage Awards. Residents can submit nominations through the Cashiers Historical Society website or in person until Sept. 1.
“They can visit our website, cashiershistory.org, and submit an application for a business that they think is deserving of this award,” she said. “They can also come to the Historical Society and pick up an application and fill it out there.”
Established in 2003, the annual Village Heritage Award recognizes local businesses that thoughtfully adapt and preserve the historic character of Cashiers, according to CHS Executive Director Amelia Golcheski.
“The Village Heritage Award is just one way to say, ‘Thank you,’ to local businesses for choosing to preserve parts of Cashiers’ history by adaptively reusing buildings,” she said. “It’s a way to incentivize developers and hold on to this village character.”
No date for the award ceremony has been announced. Golcheski said it will culminate in a celebration to honor winners with a bronze plaque that signifies their contribution to the community’s heritage.
Last year’s winner was the Orchid Restaurant, which repurposed the historic Hawkins-Menninger House, a private residence.
