Overnight road closures are underway on U.S. 64 between Highlands and Cashiers and they started Thursday night.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation will be replacing cross pipes on US 64 North from Buck Creek to the Jackson County line. The road will be closed from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m., beginning Thursday, Oct. 2. The work is being done in preparation of upcoming paving operations.
The closure will affect US 64 from east of Hospital Drive to Cherrywood Drive. Closure will be in both directions and motorist are encouraged to find alternative routes.
Austin Phillips, Macon County engineer with NCDOT, said they would have options to get emergency vehicles through the closure if needed.
Phillips said the operations will be conducted Monday thru Thursday nights intermittently for the next three weeks.
Joshua Ward, Highlands town manager, said motorists are encouraged to check electronic message boards for additional closure dates.
Bridal Veil Falls work
Work is also beginning at Bridal Veil Falls on US 64. Contractors with the NCDOT began positioning equipment in the parking area last week.
Plans are to stabilize the road where it has begun to erode with soil nails, webbing and concrete.
