A celebration of nature, art, culture
Highlands Biological Station will host Roots & Resonance, a two-day celebration of Southern Appalachian heritage, biodiversity, and creativity, taking place on Sept. 12-13.
The event will bring together music, a presentation on George Masa, and ecological insight for an immersive cultural experience that honors the deep connections between people and place.
On Friday evening, join the Highlands Performing Arts Center for an intimate concert with Tanasi, a musical collective inspired by the landscapes and lifeways of the Southern Appalachians. Drawing on the rhythms of traditional roots music and infused with a contemporary spirit, Tanasi’s performance will transport listeners through song, sound, and story.
The celebration continues on Saturday at Highlands Biological Station, where guests are invited to explore the Station’s native plant gardens, connect with regional artists and conservationists, and dive into the natural and cultural history of our mountain home.
Activities will include:
• Guided garden tours led by botanical experts
• A native plant sale featuring locally grown species
• A special presentation on George Masa
• Book signings and educational displays
Roots & Resonance is more than an event—it’s an invitation to reflect on how our stories, landscapes, and communities are interwoven.
