Highlands varsity volleyball was served a quick 3-0 loss Thursday, Sept. 14 in a home game against Murphy.
Highlands had a decent start to the game before momentum tapered off.
The first set stayed fairly close with Highlands taking a 25-17 loss. The second saw Murphy almost leave Highlands in the dust. Murphy quickly rose to 19 points. Highlands held Murphy at 19 for a few additional points, but then an out-of-bounds balls came to bite the Highlanders. Murphy took the second period 25-12.
Facing what looked to be Highlands’ last set, the Highlanders took to the court in the third period to meet their match. The first points of the third period were neck and neck. Highlands scored the first point and stayed at 2-2, but Murphy once again ran away with points, bringing the score to 8-2.
With a final score of 25-17, Murphy came out of the scrap with a new win. Murphy rose to a season score of 7-3. Highlands unfortunately fell to a season score of 2-10. With another 3-0 loss against Cherokee Monday, Highlands fell to 2-11.
Head coach, Kaitlin Bishop, said the team needs to improve coverage to be successful, especially at the net.
“Blocking and covering tonight was a huge thing for us. It’s something we’ve struggled with all year,” Bishop said.
Highlands middle and high school volleyball will host Rosman today. Middle school plays at 4 p.m. with high school teams coming out around 5 p.m.
