Pair of friends showcase Highlands in first childrens’ tale
The Adventures of Mike and Dooley was illustrated by local artist Jeanie Edwards.
A couple Highlands characters wrote a book.
It’s a children’s book and a good book at that.
The Adventures of Mike and Dooley is a children’s book following the trials and tribulations of Mike Carrier and Jeremy Dooley, and for those who know them both, the word ‘character’ takes on a multi-layered meaning.
“We’re just a couple of characters having a good time,” said Carrier by phone on Friday.
The book is an extension of Mike and Dooley’s online show, Here We Go With Mike and Dooley, just two minutes long and featuring two guys seated behind a desk.
“In today’s world, two minutes is plenty of time,” Carrier said.
The show is like a cup of coffee, or maybe an espresso shot to the system. It is rapid-fire, shot from the hip. And not like any other show about faith and life out there, according to Carrier.
“One of the things we like about the show is its authenticity,” he said. “It’s just two minutes and that’s plenty enough time to deliver a message.”
Anything longer – and Mike and Dooley have been approached by those streaming their show to increase “Here We Go With Mike and Dooley” to 30 minutes – would be just like any other religious show on the air or streaming online, Carrier said.
“Nobody would watch us then,” he said. “Two minutes gets their attention and holds it.”
The Adventures of Mike and Dooley is their show transcribed to the page.
“We talk about Highlands,” Carrier said. “In fact, on the cover is a shot of Mike and Dooley sitting on Sunset Rock.”
The book is illustrated by local artist Jeanie Edwards and was published earlier this month.
“The book features local people in it as well that everybody knows,” Carrier said.
The whole process of writing the book, from Chapter One to putting it on the market took a month.
“We wrote it in November,” Carrier said. “A portion of the proceeds from the book is going to local charities.”
The book is an extension of their podcast.
Carrier said the whole experience from their show to the book has been, “pretty overwhelming.”
“We thought it would be fun to film a weekly show talking about the events in our hometown and we had no idea the opportunities God would open for us.”
The show is broadcast in more than 120 countries and on Amazon and Roku, Carrier said.
Carrier hopes the book captures the public’s attention like “Here We Go with Mike and Dooley.”
The Faith Unveiled Network, based in Orange County, California, has added “Here We Go with Mike and Dooley” to its lineup of shows.
“We’re the second highest watched faith-based program and we’re right behind Kirk Cameron, and you’ve heard of Kirk Cameron, right,” Carrier said.
Cameron starred in the 90s sitcom “Growing Pains.”
Production is done in spurts, whenever Dooley can make it back to Highlands. A year ago, Dooley left his position as Associate Pastor with the First Baptist Church of Highlands to move to Burleson, Texas and the NorthPointe First Baptist Church as student pastor.
“Being a two-minute program we can knock out 20-30 of them whenever he’s in town,” Carrier said.
Carrier and Dooley hope the book will enjoy the same success as their show.
“The proceeds are going to charity,” Carrier said. “It’s for a good cause.”
The Adventures of Mike and Dooley can be purchased for $12.99 on Amazon and locally at shops in Highlands.
Mike and Dooley will be doing a live show at 9 a.m. on Tuesday Dec. 31 at the Blue Bike Cafe in Highlands.
“Here We Go with Mike and Dooley” ended the week as the number one ranked show on the Faith Unveiled Network. The Adventures of Mike and Dooley is currently the top-selling children’s book on the Lulu online platform, according to Carrier.
