Who are the people, places and things that have made Highlands the special place that it is now and has been over the years? What events shaped the history of this wonderful community high in the North Carolina mountains? This special year in Highlands history makes these questions even more poignant and relevant. Now, some of those questions can be answered by all who are willing to take on the challenge.
The Highlands Historical Society is sponsoring the Hunt for Highlands History on Saturday, June 28, open to all kids 15 and under. In celebration of Highlands’ 150th Anniversary, the Historical Society recently placed 17 plaques at various locations around downtown Highlands which mark the sites of some of Highlands most historic buildings. Each plaque contains a QR-Code which, when scanned, links to a video describing the history of each building. The challenge for each participant is to answer a question about the history of each site. The reward for those who complete the challenge is to win a free ice cream from Kilwin’s in Highlands.
Parents and grandparents are encouraged to accompany their kids on the tour and answer the questions together as all generations discover the rich history of Highlands over its 150 years. Participants must download the questionnaire and map from the Historical Society’s website at highlandshistory.com or pick them up at the Highlands Historical Village or Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center to begin their quest. Completed questionnaires must be turned in by eligible kids, 15 and under, to the Highlands Historical Village located at 524 North 4th Street in Highlands by 4 p.m., Saturday, June 28, to receive the gift certificate for ice cream.
Come discover the answer to the ultimate question, “Who knew that history could taste so sweet”?
