Community Coffees provide a forum

There’s no sense in putting off until tomorrow, what can be done today.

While that common adage usually brings back thoughts of chores, or work tasks, it also holds true for lighter undertakings.

Highlands Mayor Patrick Taylor planned on bringing back the popular “Community Coffee” program at Hudson Library in March. But after looking at the town’s budget calendar, the mayor and library staff decided to get a jumpstart on 2020 with a Community Coffee at 11 a.m. on Feb. 28.

The purpose of the program will be to give town residents an opportunity to voice their concerns about the town’s budget and any upcoming projects/expenditures that they would like to see funded.

As Taylor has pointed out in past town board meetings, there is no shortage of needs in town and the list seems to grow each year. From road repairs and paving, to the completion of the fiber broadband network, the board of commissioners and town administrators will have a wide array of projects to complete and issues to address during the 2020-21 fiscal year.

The time is now to be heard regarding how the town spends your taxpayer dollars.

And that is what makes the Community Coffee program such a nice addition to the landscape of Highlands. The monthly coffees provide an outlet for the public to speak directly to, and ask questions of, elected officials and town staff – No redirected emails, voice messages or red tape.

Having the coffee hours at the library provides a comfortable venue for the exchange of ideas and presents a welcoming atmosphere for citizens of all ages and demographics. It’s the perfect location for such town hall-style gatherings.

Kudos to Taylor and the Hudson Library staff for picking up the Community Coffee ball and running with it a little earlier than normal this spring. With the first town commissioners’ budget retreat scheduled for March 5, there is no time to waste.
