Graduation ceremony a welcome reprieve

Everything looked like it’s supposed to.

For one brief span of approximately 40 minutes on Saturday morning, all appeared to be right with the world in Highlands.

When the Highlands School graduating class of 2020 made their way onto the track and took their seats opposite their parents, it was a proud moment for everyone involved. Things for a short time were just as they should be.

Yes, there were face coverings worn by those in attendance and the chairs were strategically placed six feet apart. Those two aspects of the new normal during the COVID-19 pandemic were not going to be escaped, but the clear prideful smiles beamed through.

Graduating high school is an important accomplishment in a young person’s life. Not only is having earned a diploma a step towards a career and a brighter future, but it’s also a signal of adulthood.

Like it or not, the fun filled days of pep rallies, sporting events, and just palling around with friends are almost over. Soon the rigors of higher education will take hold for many of the graduates.

Others will join the workforce and learn equally important lessons about life after high school.

No one could have foreseen the circumstances that led to the school year ending with online education for the final two months. While some students were undoubtedly disappointed to miss out on spring sports seasons, signing each other’s yearbooks and going to senior prom, that disappointment never showed outwardly.

The tone of the class of 2020 has remained positive through a unique time in American history. As co-valedictorian Camren Dalton pointed out, ending their journey at Highlands School outside on a perfect summer day was a “pretty picturesque” way to leave a legacy.

Now it’s time for the class of 2020 to begin building a new legacy, as productive adults, quality citizens and the driving force to make the world a little bit brighter. They have the tools, and the right collective mindset, to be a memorable class for all the right reasons.
