Halloween done right in Highlands

Highlands does a number of events tied to holidays, but perhaps no single event is as well attended as the “All Hallows Eve” celebration along Main Street.

For lovers of Halloween, the night is a must-see every year and 2023 promises to be no different.

Creating a safe, fun experience for ghosts and goblins of all ages, Highlands’ Main Street (from Second to Fifth Streets) will be open to pedestrians for Halloween on Main from 6 - 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31. Participating merchants will distribute candy, some of which is purchased by the Highlands Chamber of Commerce and delivered to them by the Highlands School Interact Club.

Volunteers from local civic organizations will be stationed around town, and at each crosswalk on Main Street, to help ensure pedestrians of all ages have ample opportunity to enjoy the traditional trick-or-treat event. Obviously, with so much activity going on, motorists are asked to use alternate routes to navigate around the event and to take extra caution while driving in areas where children may be present.

Aside from the door-to-door candy gathering, All Hallows Eve also features live music. The Foxfire Boys will be playing near Reeves Ace Hardware, DJ Mike Murphy will be in Wright Square near Kilwins, and High Five will be rocking on Main Street near Berkshire Hathaway Realty.

There will be a “Kids Zone” on 4th Street complete with an inflatable slide and obstacle course sponsored by the Highlands School PTO. A family friendly haunted house, sponsored by Highlands Police Department will also be open for those brave enough to enter.

Popcorn will be provided by the Highlands School Booster Club, hot chocolate and apple cider will be distributed by Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Plateau and volunteers from both Rotary organizations, Mountain Top and Highlands, will grill and give away hot dogs. Donations will be accepted.

Whether Halloween is your favorite holiday, or far down the list, one thing is certain – Highlands does Halloween right. It’s a fun way to end what has been an amazing leaf season.
