If you’ve ever forgotten an important date, you aren’t alone.
According to a study done in 2021, roughly 80 percent of people have forgotten their wedding anniversary at some point during their relationship. A more recent study found that approximately 40 percent of people have forgotten their significant other’s birthday.
Everyone gets busy, the days run together, it happens.
This month three local organizations are marking milestones with celebrations across the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau.
The Cashiers Highlands Humane Society commemorated 37 years in existence with an open house on July 13 at its facility on US64 West in Cashiers. Along with the usual tours of the campus the open house also served as the ribbon cutting for “Misty’s Trail” a new dog walking trail on the grounds.
CHHS has become a fixture in the community and the organization’s work to find forever homes for lost or abandoned cats and dogs has never been more important.
At noon on Sunday, July 21, the Gordon Center for Children will host a “40 for 40” celebration in honor of its 40th anniversary.
Many in Highlands remember Highlands Preschool in the 1980s, a preschool led by Mrs. Wilma Gordon that poured love into every child that walked through its doors. Fast forward to today, the organization is now known as The Gordon Center for Children. It serves children ages one to five and continue Ms. Wilma’s legacy through a literacy-based curriculum.
The Cashiers Chamber of Commerce and Vision Cashiers will be joining forces to host a celebration of their own on Wednesday, July 24 when they will cut the ribbon on a new section of greenway trail dedicated to former Chamber director Thomas Taulbee. The event will take place at 10 a.m. adjacent to the Chamber office on US64.
Taulbee was a staple of Cashiers events and a friendly face to all of the business owners in the community. He passed away unexpectedly in November of 2023.
While they may not carry the same weight as a wedding anniversary, or your spouse’s birthday, these events mark milestones for three local organizations and we should all take a minute to recognize and congratulate them.
