Highlands gets a big part of its community feel back this week.
Saturday is the “Meander in May” event sponsored by the Highlands Chamber of Commerce and with near-perfect weather in the early forecast, its sure to bring in crowds all over town to peruse Highlands businesses and enjoy live entertainment.
The annual meander is a great way to showcase all the Highlands has to offer in the business district and it serves as an unofficial segue into the always busy Memorial Day week.
Following the Meander in May, that’s when one of Highlands’ most beloved traditions returns for 2023. The first Saturday’s on Pine concert of the season will take place at Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park at 6 p.m.
The Boomers will take the stage for the first concert of the year. The popular band has played major events across the country, from President Bill Clinton’s inauguration celebration, to the NFL owners meetings.
Having shared the stage with Hootie and the Blowfish, Melissa Etheridge, Alison Krauss, Edwin McCain, Emmilou Harris, Chynna Phillips, and Huey Lewis and the News, the members of The Boomers are no strangers to the stage and know what it takes to entertain a crowd.
While the Chamber of Commerce does its best to help bring tourism dollars into Highlands, the weekly concerts in the park are definitely more of a local attraction – and that is perfectly fine. Being able to meet at the park and talk to friends and neighbors, some you may not have seen during the winter months, is a valuable asset to the community.
Bring a lawn chair, a cold beverage, and enjoy a night in Highlands with friends and family.
Fire department dedication
Another point of community pride will be on display Friday afternoon when the new Highlands Fire Department is officially dedicated and opened.
The new facility on Franklin Road has been in use for a couple of months now, but Friday will feature a dedication ceremony with many of the people who helped make the new station possible. The event will begin at 4 p.m.
