Halloween unique in Highlands

Halloween is a special time in Highlands.
Being a small, close-knit town offers some luxuries from yesteryear that bigger metropolitan areas no longer have, and many of those will be on display in the next week.
Tonight, the Highlands Rec Center will host the Halloween Spooktacular and dozens of children dressed like super heroes, Disney characters, ghouls and goblins will get to experience a fun, safe throwback Halloween celebration.
Most parents and grandparents fondly remember bobbing for apples, trying to drop clothespins in a mason jar, or any other number of fun Halloween-related games from their childhood. The Spooktacular offers a night where the weather isn’t a factor and families can come out for some good old-fashioned fun.
If getting your face wet for a Granny Smith doesn’t excite you, Highlands annual trick-or-treat event will take place from 6 – 8 p.m. on Halloween night (Oct. 31). Several businesses and residences will have their lights on handing out candy to costumed kids. Going door-to-door in search of Reese Cups and Milky Ways might be unheard of this day and age in some places, but Highlands and other small towns are keeping the tradition alive.
Hudson Library is going to get the festivities started on Halloween with a Kids Zone party from 3:30 – 5 p.m. The event is designed for children ages 5 – 12, but librarian Carlyn Morenus was quick to point out that younger children can join the fun as well. Activities will include creating with 3D pens, a cakewalk, building your own haunted mansion, and more. Costumes are welcome but not required.
Of course, the backdrop for the Halloween fun is another factor that makes Highlands unique. With the fall colors reaching their peak in the next 10 days or so, the vivid scene of reds, oranges and yellows adds to the ambience of the season and makes the holiday feel like it belongs as the signal for longer nights and cooler temperatures.
Halloween revelers young and old should take time to get out and enjoy all Highlands has to offer in the coming week. Have fun, and be safe!
