SnowFest brings winter fun

Highlands has seen plenty of cold days in the past two weeks.

Temperatures in the single digits with wind chills below zero were the talk of the town last weekend.

But the one thing Highlands has not experienced yet this winter is snow.

While much of the region to the north and west of Highlands saw significant snowfall earlier this month, there has been no snow in our area – much to the chagrin of area children who look forward to an occasional snow day and all the activities that come along with it.

Since Mother Nature hasn’t provided any snow for tubing, sledding, snowball fights, or any other outdoor fun, the Highlands Chamber of Commerce is taking matters into its own hands and firing up the snow making machines inside Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park for the third annual SnowFest on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The snow will fall from machines provided by Highlands Outpost and there is a full slate of events on tap. There will be a snow tube merry-go-round, a snow slide, ice skating, magical igloos, and snow-ga (a play on yoga). A DJ will also be entertaining the crowd throughout SnowFest’s two-day run.

While Highlands has plenty of events during the spring, summer, and fall, SnowFest is the only major event to take place in January or February. Because tourism isn’t a major factor this time of year, SnowFest has gained a solid following among local people looking for a day out with their friends and families.

If the warm and cozy comforts of indoor entertainment are more your speed, the Highlands Performing Arts Center will host America’s Got Talent finalist “Catapult” at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The family-friendly show features dancers and acrobats performing behind a screen to create an amazing shadow show. Packed with hundreds of shape transformation, the show is full of humor, emotion and engaging stories.

It’s easy to get caught looking ahead to warmer temperatures, but Highlands has plenty to do even on a cold January weekend.
