Sometimes its okay to think cute

Newspapers aren’t known for “cute” content.

Most of the year The Highlander staff works hard to put together stories that inform our readers about the community around them. It’s a labor of love that requires nights, weekends, and untold number of additional hours outside the office at events, government meetings, ballgames, accidents, and everything in between.

However, the week of Christmas there is an exception made for more “cuteness” in the newspaper. In this week’s edition you will find our annual “Letters to Santa” brought to you by the elementary students of Blue Ridge and Highlands School.

Luckily for the students, Santa Claus is a known reader of The Highlander.

Christmas week is one of the weeks we most look forward to in the newsroom, when reporters Kevin McCall and Larry Griffin bring back the Santa letters, everyone knows it’s time for a good chuckle. From the unintentionally hilarious phonetic spelling, to the off-the-wall and sometimes ridiculous requests, we enjoy reading the children’s letters every bit as much as they enjoy writing them.

We encourage you to check out the letters and see what is on the children’s minds this holiday season. Among the most popular Christmas requests were the PS5 (we all would like one of those), puppies, Minecraft items, LOL Dolls, makeup kits, dirt bikes, and anything to do with Legos.

The wonder of the holiday season through the eyes of children takes us all back to those amazing Christmas gifts that marked our youth. Maybe it was a new red wagon, the freedom presented by a bright and shiny bicycle, or the advancement of technology via video game – No matter the actual present, everyone has a Christmas morning they remember.

We hope the children of Highlands and Cashiers have been good all year and Santa Claus brings them at least some of the items on their wish list.

Thank you to the students, teachers and staff of Blue Ridge and Highlands School for making the letters to Santa possible, and Merry Christmas from The Highlander staff!
