Fresh off a two-week Christmas break, the Summit Bears boys basketball team fell to the Highlanders, 64-27, at home on Tuesday night.
The Highlanders outscored the Bears 10-3 during the first quarter. Summit Bear Noah Becker opened the first quarter with a three-point shot, which was quickly echoed by a three-point shot from their opponent.
The Highlanders then went on to score seven additional unanswered points during the first quarter. Missed shots by both sides plagued the first eight minutes of the game leading into the second quarter.
The second quarter began with the Highlanders outscoring the Bears 14-0 during the first half of that quarter. At the 4:50 mark, Becker landed another three-point basket, which gave the Bears some fuel to add seven points to their tally. But the Highlanders added an extra four points before the end of the half.
At halftime, the score was 28-13, with the Bears down by 15 points.
Coming back from halftime, Highlanders James Earp and Kasen Mitchell quickly put four points on the board before Summit Bear Benito Morales sank a two-point shot.
Highlands then added four more points to their score, but Summit Bear Frankie Marquina added a three-point basket of his own.
That was not enough to freeze Highlands in their place, though, since the Highlanders went on a nine-point score streak.
Morales cut that sprint off with a three-point shot, which was followed by a three-point basket from Highlander J.D. Head.
Another three-point basket was landed by Morales, and the score going into the final quarter was 49-24.
The final quarter was dominated by the Highlanders, who outpaced the Bears 15-3. Becker landed one last three-point shot for the Bears toward the end of the game, but it was not enough to close the gap between them and their opponent.
