Summit Charter wins homecoming opener; Highlands, BREC fall
Chase Clement and Sydney Sinclair were announced as homecoming king and queen during the Summit Charter homecoming basketball games on Friday, Nov. 14.
The Little Smoky Mountain Conference varsity boys’ and girls’ basketball seasons tipped off Friday, Nov. 14, with Summit Charter facing Nantahala High School in its homecoming games.
The girls, who played first, won their game in dominant fashion, crushing the Hawks 62-12. Bailey Robinson led all scorers with 22 points and Oliva Reeves finished with 14. They move to 1-0 on the season.
The boys closed out the night with a closely contested 84-82 win. Chance Wilson and August Stewart-Payne put up impressive performances, draining eight three-pointers each. Wilson finished with 32 points and Stewart-Payne had 30. They also start the season 1-0.
Summit Charter announced its homecoming king and queen in front of a packed gymnasium during the night’s games. Chase Clement and Sydney Sinclair were crowned following the conclusion of voting.
On Tuesday, Nov. 18, both Highlands School and Blue Ridge Early College dropped their boys’ and girls’ opening games. Highlands faced Andrews High School on the road, while BREC traveled to Asheville to take on IC Imagine.
The Lady Highlanders came up short in a 39-38 loss after giving up the lead late. The boys’ team couldn’t secure a victory over the Wildcats either, falling 58-39. Highlands will look to reach .500 in its next set of games against Towns County on Nov. 24.
In Asheville, the Lady Bobcats were edged 30-26 in the first game of the evening. The boys’ team later struggled against the Kingfishers, suffering a 73-41 defeat. Both teams open the season 0-1 and will face Shining Rock Classical Academy on Nov. 24.
