Highlands Hurricanes shine in three team meet

On Saturday, the Highlands Hurricanes Swim Team hosted the North Georgia Rapids and the Smoky Mountain Aquatics Club.  The Hurricanes won 438 to 197 to 111.

    The Hurricanes were led by Alyse Remery and Bella Batista each who scored 26 points.  Remery broke a team record in the 100 backstroke and both won three events. Morgan Mason, Annabelle Searles and Junior Olympian Finneaus Garner all had 24 points, while Paolo McRae had 23. All four of them won two events.  Cody Levy, Jayce Powell and Junior Olympian Chase Kenter scored 21 points. Kenter and Jayce Powell won three events. Kenley Birchfield and Junior Olympian Justin Powell had 20 points. Justin Powell won two events and Birchfield also won one. Sister and brother Charlie and Wylie Hinton scored 19 points.

  In another brother sister scoring tie Ivan and Nicole Shchelgachov had 18 points.  Ivan had three second place finishes and Nicole two. Ian Batista and Emilina Hernandez scored 16 points. and a first place finish each. Corena Dearth, Blake Kenter, AnnMarie Hinton and Penelope McRae had 15, 14, 13 and 13 points respectively. Dearth had a first, Blake Kenter a second, AnnMarie Hinton and Penelope McRae both had two thirds.

Aleks Petric-Sakonjic scored 12 points and a second place finish. Alex Lopez, Angelina Levy and Avery Birchfield had 6, 5, and 4 points.  Angelina Levy had a second place while Lopez and Avery Birchfield two thirds.

   As a side note, in the last event of the day, Alyse Remery, Justin Powell and Charlie Hinton all had excellent swims in their first ever mile swim race.

  The Highlands Hurricanes Swim Team is a Highlands Recreation Park Team that practices in the evenings at the Highlands Recreation Park Pool. The only requirement to join is that a prospective swimmer must able to swim 25 yards (a length of the Recreation Park Pool) unassisted.
