Freshman Ian Batista and senior Aniah McKim represented Highlands School at the NCHSAA Swimming State Championships in Cary on Feb. 14, competing against the state’s best swimmers from 1A, 2A and 3A. Batista placed 27th after entering as the 32nd seed, while McKim finished 15th as the 16th seed, helping Highlands score 34th out of 177 schools.
Competing in the 500-yard freestyle — the longest event in high school swimming — Batista dropped 15 seconds from his personal record time, finishing in 6:11.12. Head coach Steve Hott credited Batista’s work ethic for his strong performance as a freshman at the state championships.
“In the whole program, he is one of the hardest workers and is one of the best attendants to practice,” said Hott. “I said, ‘this is what happens when you come to practice and work hard.’”
McKim attended the State Championships for the fourth time in four years, securing his best time of the season in the 100-yard breast stroke with 1:07.90.
“It was very good for Aniah as an experienced buddy to be there with Ian on his first time,” said Hott. “Having a swimmer that’s been there and done that, especially as a freshman, makes a big difference.”
Hott said what stood out most during the meet was how prepared his swimmers were — both physically and mentally — and the composure they showed in their events.
With another season coming to a close, Hott expressed satisfaction with his team’s performances throughout the winter, which earned the program a fourth straight berth at the state championships. He also thanked assistant coach Jackie Powell, along with other key members of Highlands School and the local community, for their support.
“Coach Lamb, the athletic department, Booster Club and recreation park are really supportive of our swim team,” said Hott. “The middle school swimmers and Highlands Hurricanes Swim Team also held the high school team in high regard and encouraged them all season.”
For more swim action, the Highlands Hurricanes will participate in a meet at the Jackson County Aquatic Center on March 21.
