Highlands’ varsity girls’ basketball, BREC varsity boys and girls earn first wins

    On Monday, Nov. 24, the Highlands School and Blue Ridge Early College varsity boys’ and girls’ basketball teams played their home openers against Towns County and Shining Rock Classical Academy. The Lady Highlanders and both BREC teams secured their first wins of the season.  
    The Lady Bobcats opened the evening with a dominant 62-35 win over the Lady Falcons. Junior Brooklyn Kennedy led the scoring with 34 points, and senior McKenzie Woods finished with 20. They move to 1-1 on the season. 
    The BREC boys team followed with a 64-55 victory after an impressive fourth quarter. Juniors Dakota Kinsey and William Russell, along with senior Evan Pressley, led the Bobcats in scoring.  Kinsey scored 21 points, Russell added 20 and Pressley finished with 17. They also improved to 1-1.
    Both BREC teams will host Hayesville on Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. 
    The Lady Highlanders bounced back from last week’s loss to Andrews with a 33-24 victory over the winless Lady Indians, improving to 1-1.
     The Highlands’ boys team struggled, falling 63-33. They drop to 0-2. 
    Both Highlands teams will host Hayesville on Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
