What has become a spring tradition in Highlands was once again renewed on Saturday when teams of volunteers grabbed their trash bags, gloves, and orange vests for the 2024 Plateau Pickup, sponsored by the Highlands Chamber of Commerce.
Nearly 100 dedicated volunteers participated in the annual litter sweep, and collected more than 20 cubic yards of roadside trash. Starting at Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park, volunteers received assignments to clean up specific areas across, including downtown Highlands and US64, NC28, and NC106. After the cleanup, everyone gathered back at the park for lunch.
“I always enjoy the Plateau Pickup and I’m always grateful that the Chamber and so many of our local businesses and organizations choose to participate,” Highlands Mayor Patrick Taylor said. “Keeping our community litter free is something that pretty much everyone agrees on and is willing to work together to accomplish.”
Plateau Pickup is organized by the Highlands Chamber of Commerce/Visit Highlands, NC with partnership and logistical support provided by Macon County Sheriff’s Office, US Forest Service, NC Department of Transportation, NC State Patrol, Town of Highlands and Town of Highlands Police Department. Local companies and organizations including Hotwire Communications, Mindspring, Mountain Garden Club, Mountaintop Rotary, Old Edwards Hospitality Group and United Methodist Church Men’s Group provided volunteers.
“This event is a highlight of the year for me,” said Kaye McHan, executive director of the Highlands Chamber of Commerce/Visit Highlands. “It showcases the strong dedication of our local residents to protecting and preserving our community.”
