The Mario Brothers, Beetlejuice, Leatherface, Poseidon and several Disney characters and witches were among the sightings on Main Street on Thursday evening, Oct. 31 for the town’s annual Halloween Trick or Treat event.
Sponsored by the Highlands Chamber of Commerce, businesses and local organizations set up tables and massive buckets of candy and families clad in the garb of various TV and movie characters and other costumes made their way from 5th street all the way down to The Park on Main and the churches on the other side of downtown.
Music from local bands played at a few different points along the street, blaring country and blues rock tunes. People danced along and ate hot dogs after they were done making the rounds of the Trick or Treating and the air was festive throughout the evening.
Chamber director Kaye McHan said it was a “wonderful celebration of community.”
“It was such a joy to see people of all ages—from young trick-or-treaters to costumed adults—joining in on the fun. Our local businesses, police department, fire department, and community members really embraced the spirit of Halloween,” she said after the event.
Along with the traditional trick-or-treating, the Rotary Club of Highlands and the Mountaintop Rotary Club joined forces to offer up more than 2,000 hot dogs and drinks for revelers. The hit dog giveaway tradition has grown quickly over the past several years.
“It takes a lot of volunteers, from the cooking, to the wrapping, to the passing out drinks, there is a lot of work that goes into making this night happen each year,” Rotary Club of Highlands President Randy Foster said. “We can’t thank all of our Rotarians who volunteered their time enough. People really seem to enjoy it.”
