Meander in May kicks off concerts

The streets of Highlands were alive on Saturday with sights and sounds of artists and musicians taking part in the first ever “Meander in May” sponsored by the Highlands Chamber of Commerce.

The event served as an unofficial start to the outdoor tourism season and offered guests the opportunity to take in mountain arts and culture at a variety of venues around town.

“We have gotten positive feedback from people who came up and enjoyed themselves on Saturday and overall we feel like the event went really well,” Highlands Chamber Executive Director Kaye McHan said. “It was a pleasure for Visit Highlands, NC and Highlands Chamber to kick off our 2021 outdoor concert season last weekend with Meander in May. It was a great success for residents and visitors.”

The meander showcased more than a dozen artists and musicians at 14 locations, including The Bascom Center for Visual Arts, the Highlands Visitors Center, Hudson Library and Town Square.

Performers covered a variety of musical genres – from bluegrass to jazz and artists displayed their talents in jewelry making, painting, woodworking, metallurgy and photography.

McHan noted that the goal is to make the Meander in May an annual event following the success of Saturday’s showing.

“We are so fortunate to live in an area that has a long history of quality performing and visual arts and Meander in May is an opportunity to celebrate those local talents,” McHan said. “We look forward to providing this interactive arts experience again in May 2022.”
