New scoreboard at HHS

Highlands School installs new scoreboard for soccer teams

The Highlands School soccer teams will now be able to keep time and score better with a new scoreboard that was installed last week.

“This means everything to the soccer teams,” HHS athletic director Brett Lamb said. “We were having trouble with the other one. We reached out to First Citizens Bank and Old Edwards, and they supported us like they always do. It is going to be wonderful on my part as an administrator to make sure everything goes well. It is great for our kids and our community.”

The funding for the scoreboard came from First Citizens Bank and Old Edwards, who both put in $5,000 towards the scoreboard.

“We have always been a big supporter of the school,” Cynthia Dendy with First Citizens Bank said. “We love Highlands School, and my husband grew up here. We just think it’s important to give back and be a part of this. My sons play soccer, and it is going to be really awesome seeing this in the background.”

Brian Crook with Old Edwards Inn spent seven years coaching the Highlanders in soccer.

“This team has always been a great interest to me,” Crook said. “It is great to see the way the facility has developed here. I mean, we used to have to go up to Buckcreek and practice up there. We have a wonderful field here now and it is amazing to be able to be a part of the community here.”

Looking at the scoreboard, Crook said it brings back memories of his time on the pitch.

“There were some games when you would be winning 1-0, and you want that clock to get down to zero as quick as possible,” Crook said. “It is going to be excited watching this year with all of the parents and family. I only got back into Highlands about a month ago, so hopefully I’ll get involved with the team again.”

The sponsorships last for five years and then will be switched out for new businesses that want to sponsor the scoreboard.

The varsity soccer team will take on Brevard on Thursday at 6 p.m., for their opening match.
