Rain doesn't stop Easter fun

Easter ceremonies and events got no favors from Mother Nature on Saturday.

Temperatures in the 40’s and cold rain forced adjustments to holiday events. First was the annual Highlands Easter Egg Hunt, originally scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Rec Park lawn. Due to the rain, the egg hunt was turned into an “Easter Scramble” by parks and recreation staff.

Candy-filled eggs were spread around the Rec Center gymnasium and children were split into age groups before being turned loose to pick up as many eggs as they could fit in their baskets. The good news for the children and parents that chose to brave the elements and take part in the scramble – the same number of eggs, but less children to scour the floor for them.

“Having to move the egg hunt indoors is definitely not ideal, but the kids always make the best of it, and they seem to have a good time regardless of the venue,” Rec Center manager Maxine Ramey said. “The youngest age group didn’t quite get all the eggs picked up, but the older kids certainly did. I think everyone went home with a full Easter basket so they were happy.”

Highlands second annual dog show at Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park was also held Saturday despite a steady rain throughout. Sponsored by Landmark Realty, the dog show featured pups and their owners in competition for awards such as “Best in Show,” “Best Trick,” and “Looks Most like their Owner.”

Fortunately for many of Highlands local churches, the weather broke Sunday morning and allowed for outdoor Easter Sunday services to be held as scheduled.
