Annual race raises $25,000 for Literacy and Learning Center
More than 200 runners descended on Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders park on Saturday for the annual Rotary Club of Highlands Twilight 5k.
The event, which has become one of the most popular road races in Western North Carolina, is expected to raise more than $25,000 for the Literacy and Learning Center in Highlands once all the receipts are counted.
“Every year the community really pours its support into the race and this year was no different,” Twilight 5k organizer Derek Taylor said. “We have had donations come in from a number of local businesses and individuals, we had an army of volunteers who helped on race day, and of course the runners who keep the race going year after year. It wouldn’t be possible without all of the community support.”
William Whitaker, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, crossed the finish line first with a time of 18 minutes and 56 seconds. James Moore, of Highlands, finished second overall while Ray Gill and Gary Ball, both of Brevard, came across third and fourth respectively.
Taylor Sherrill, of Statesville, won the women’s race in 23 minutes and nine seconds.
Once the final racers crossed the finish line, the party started with live music from Spalding McIntosh on the Founders Park stage and complimentary beer donated by the Ugly Dog Pub for all race participants age 21 and older.
“Each year the proceeds from the race go to support youth programs in Highlands, whether through the school itself or an education-based organization,” Taylor said. “The race brings people together and it’s become a really fun community event over the years. It’s a great way to promote tourism and raise money for a good cause.”
