Summit Charter delivers with food drive

A flatbed truck backed up to Fishes & Loaves temporary shelter Monday, delivering around 3,000 items, or an estimated ton and a half, of supplies from Summit Charter School.

Aaron Littlefield, middle school social studies teacher at Summit, said everybody pitched in over the two week collection, but the bulk of the donation came in the last few days.

The middle school student council organized the donations this year, but collecting nearly three thousand items takes a village.

“K-5 did so much on the front end,” Littlefield said. “All of the eighth grade pitched in and sorted through [donations]. We sorted over a thousand cans by type,” with still more to come in the final days.

Littlefield said he also asked Fishes & Loaves what they could use so the donation could do the most good for the community. While canned goods are always nice, other shelf-stable foods like rice and pastas and sauces can help make more complete meals. Pantries can also frequently make use of toiletries, personal hygiene items, and menstrual products.

Susie Davis, a member of Fishes & Loaves board of directors, estimates Summit donated a few months’ worth of necessary supplies.
