Highlands goal keeper Ethan Tate was recently awarded a scholarship by the NC Association of Rescue and EMS.

Highlands School 2021 graduate Ethan Tate was recently named as one of 30 recipients statewide of the North Carolina Association of Rescue and Emergency Medical Services “Children of Members” scholarship.

“Ethan was eligible for the scholarship because of his father Jim’s service as an EMS worker and volunteer firefighter,” Highlands Fire and Rescue Chief Ryan Gearhart said. “Ethan is an excellent student and very deserving.”

Tate’s scholarship is for $15,000, which is disbursed at the end of each semester for four years of college in the amount of $1,875. He plans on attending High Point University in the fall to study computer science.

The North Carolina Association of Rescue and Emergency Medical Services awards scholarships annually to outstanding high school graduates. The awards are made eligible to students who apply and are enrolling in a four-year college or university in North Carolina beginning in the fall.

Along with the 30 awards of $15,000, the organization also awards 30 scholarships of $9,500, 30 scholarships of $4,000 and 30 scholarships of $2,000. All scholarships awards are based on the applicant’s scholastic achievement, intellectual ability, financial need, character and promise of future contribution to the state and community.
