TLLC to start Pre-K program

Stepping up to fill the education gap.

That has been at the heart of The Literacy and Learning Center’s mission since the organization opened its doors for the first time.

And the tradition of educational advancement will continue when TLLC opens its North Carolina Certified Pre-K program later this year. The inception of Pre-K at TLLC was announced this week and executive director Bonnie Potts showed her excitement for the program by highlighting the need for Pre-K in Highlands.

“We are delighted to introduce the NC-certified pre-K program at The Literacy & Learning Center in Highlands,” Potts said. “We recognize the pressing need for early childhood education in our community, and our goal is to provide a supportive and enriching environment that prepares children for future success.”

There are approximately 70 children on the Pre-K waiting list in Highlands. The program at TLLC will be able to accommodate 25 children.

The Pre-K program at TLLC in Highlands will offer a comprehensive curriculum that aligns with the rigorous standards set by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Through a play-based and child-centered approach, young learners will engage in activities that enhance their language and literacy skills, develop mathematical and scientific thinking, nurture social-emotional well-being, and promote physical growth.

“We will need to add staff in order to be open for Pre-K, including a certified lead teacher and two assistants, so it’s a big undertaking,” TLLC marketing manager Jennie Edwards said. “There will be additional fundraising that needs done to make sure the program is successful and we are working on those efforts currently.”

TLLC will actively seek partnerships with parents, caregivers, and local organizations to build a strong support network and ensure the success of every child enrolled in the new Pre-K program.

The center’s state-of-the-art facility has been purposefully designed to create a safe and stimulating learning environment. Classrooms will be equipped with age-appropriate resources, technology, and materials that encourage exploration, creativity, and critical thinking. TLLC is committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive space that fosters the development of each child.
