A new chapter in Highlands’ retail sector began on Saturday when Dollar General opened its doors at 28 Cherrywood Drive. The new location, approximately halfway  between Highlands and Cashiers, is the first major retail chain to move into the Highlands market.

Macon County Public Health officials have identified a rabies positive skunk.  The skunk was turned over to Macon County Animal Services after it was killed following an interaction with a citizen’s dog.

Highlands wasted no time in putting to rest Nantahala’s thoughts of an upset on the hardwood Monday night. After giving up a basket in the opening minute, the Highlanders ripped off a 13-2 run and never looked back in a 72-39 victory over the Hawks in Little Smoky Mountain 1-A Conference play.

Information from a closed session of the Highlands Board of Commissioners has created a stir after an attorney representing a company that submitted a proposal to become the town’s fiber network administrator issued a letter asking the board of commissioners to throw out the project bids.
