Arthur William Grabe
On Tuesday, July 28, 2020, Arthur William Grabe, our beloved “Auggie,” formerly of Highlands, passed to eternal rest with his family at his side.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Art was a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. His four years of service included 10 months in Vietnam.
A few years after his return, he met the love of his life, Valerie Piluso, whom he married in 1971. Over the next 40 plus years, they partnered to build a string of successful small businesses, first in south Florida and later in Highlands, including The Christmas Cottage and Alyxandra’s Boutique. He also was a talented builder and enjoyed renovating homes. They loved attending Community Bible Church. Eventually they retired to St. Michaels, MD, to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Art devoted his life to his wife and family. He took tremendous joy in the company of his three children and seven grandchildren: Alexandra (Joseph Grogan)—Tecumseh, Francesca, Mathilde and Magdalena – presently of Washington, DC; Zachary (Veronica)—Madelyn, Cameron, and Eleanor – of West Palm Beach, FL; and Michael (Katie) of Annapolis, MD.
He was predeceased by his brother, William Grabe (Carol), and is survived by sister Hazel Worsham (Maurice) of Memphis, TN.
Art loved the water and spending time at the beach with his family. His storytelling, generosity, patience, and ability to fix and build anything will be missed. He was a true gentleman.
The Grabe family plans to hold a private ceremony with military honors later in the year.
