Gwendolyn Mae Austin Brammer, passed away peacefully in her home in Highlands on Jan. 20, at the age of 93.

She and her husband, Harold Brammer, were longtime residents of Highlands area. They were active in both church and community.

She was born March 20, 1928 to Stella and Bob Austin in Welch, WV and was raised there. She graduated from Mary Baldwin College and married Harold on Aug. 5, 1949. They began their family in Welch and moved to Florida where Harold started his first business. They settled in Largo, Florida for more than 40 years.  Gwen was named the Woman of the Year in 1971 by the Largo LaSertoma Club for her church, school and civic service.

In 1978, they built a home on Scaly Mountain where she served as the President of the Scaly Mountain Woman’s Club. Ten years later they created Brookside Lane in Highlands and built the home they would live in for the rest of their lives.   

The couple joined First Presbyterian of Highlands in 1981. Their  work in the church became a cornerstone of their life. Gwen sang in the choir for many years and was active in all the Women’s Committees including the Seekers Women’s Bible Study. She served as chair both for the Seekers and Women’s’ Circle, taught high school Sunday School and helped lead youth retreats. She served on the Highlands Playhouse Board and volunteered with the Literary Council, the Chamber of Commerce the Hospital and various fundraising activities.

She is survived by her children Karen Austin, Leah Brammer Long and Austin Brammer, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A service is planned at First Presbyterian Church, 471 Main St, on March 14, at 2 p.m.
