Sara Hoover Thorne, 73, of Sewall’s Point, Florida, passed away Saturday, Dec. 5, 2020 in the presence of her loving husband under the care of VITAS Hospice. She was born in the Village of Pearl River, NY to John and Sara Shepard Hoover.
After high school, Sally continued her education earning her Associates Degree at Barry University. Sally grew up in New York and fell in love with Florida during her family vacations here. In her adult years she relocated to South Florida, living in Miami, Palm Beach County and Martin County. She has been a resident of Sewall’s Point for 26 years coming from Delray Beach, FL.
Sally loved sitting on her porch in Highlands, watching hummingbirds, and watching for the black bears. She loved learning and teaching and being an active part of her community. Sally was display curator for the Historic Society of Delray Beach and a leader at the Historical Society Camp for Kids in Highlands.
Sally attended American School in Mexico City and studied Mexican Culture and History, even becoming fluent in Spanish within two years. She worked as a translator and phone operator in Miami sometime after the Cuban Missile Crisis. She taught Spanish and was often utilized as a translator.
Sally participated in all aspects of theater, from set to costumes to acting roles at the Delray Beach Playhouse. She was a board member of Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control. Landscaping was a favorite hobby. Sally was a member of the Native Plant Society in Martin County, and a 10-year member and past president of the Seagrape Garden Club in Delray Beach. She was a member of the Audobon Society and was a two term past president of the Boca Chapter, as well as a member in the Martin County chapter.
Predeceased by her parents, John Grant Hoover and Sara Irene Shepard Hoover. She is survived by her Husband of 43 years, David Thorne of Sewall’s Point, FL, her only Sister, Tamar (Tammy) Hoover Taylor of Greenacres, FL, her Daughters : Mary Lepsch-Thorne of Delray Beach, FL and Sara Tilly of Lake Worth and her grandsons, Andrew Tilly and Sean Tilly of Gainesville, FL.
