Outhouse races are comedic event

In a world that can seem all too serious, there is always room for a little light-hearted humor. With that in mind, one of Western North Carolina’s whackiest events returns on Saturday for another heart-racing ride down the bunny hill at Sapphire Valley Ski Resort.

The 2022 Great Outhouse Races are sure to draw a big crowd of onlookers hoping to see homemade outhouses on skis fly downhill to victory. The uniquely designed and decorated outhouses draw plenty of laughs, but bigger than being declared the fastest vessel is the fundraising element of the event.

Each year organizers pick a different local nonprofit to hand over the proceeds. In 2022 the beneficiary will be Fishes and Loaves Food Pantry in Cashiers.

So, if you have a couple free hours on Saturday between 1:30-4 p.m., head over to Sapphire Valley and have a chuckle for a good cause. Drop a few dollars in the donation jar for Fishes and Loaves Food Pantry and everyone wins.

For spectators looking for a more traditional comedy outlet, the Highlands Performing Arts Center has you covered on Friday, Feb 25. James Gregory, who is often referred to as “The Funniest Man in America,” will take the PAC stage with his brand of southern humor.

Gregory is known for his hilarious observations of life in the south and the people who call the region home. “Croc Pots and Chicken Legs” is his latest touring show and it’s sure to have something to tickle the audience’s ribs.

Gregory’s performance also provides guests who may not have been by the PAC in some time the opportunity to see the progress being made on the facility’s expansion. Tickets for “Croc Pots and Chicken Legs” are on sale via the PAC box office online at highlandsperformingarts.com.

We may be stuck in the gloomy days of February, and cabin fever is likely setting in for some, but there is no reason to be grumpy. Get out and enjoy a little humor and remember not to take everything so seriously.
