Mrs. Heller’s letter of a couple weeks ago regarding the various “fests” held in town hit a cord with me. My question is when is enough, enough? It seems the chamber of commerce is intent on more. More events aimed at bringing more visitors to town, more visitors, more demand for short term rentals and on and on. It appears the chamber is obsessed with more.
The chamber is doing what chambers are supposed to do. I totally understand that. It is focused on increasing business for its members by bringing more people to Highlands. But my question is where does it end?
In most towns and cities, chamber activities are needed for the lifeblood of the towns and to compete with other towns and cities. Highlands has not found itself in need of an economic boost. Most of the businesses can’t find enough help as it is. And many residents came here to enjoy Highlands as it is, not as the chamber appears to want it.
Of course, we want a prosperous and lively community with a strong economy. But when is enough, enough? How many events do we need? At what point does the chamber’s activities interfere with the lifestyle of the residents? The divisive short term rental issue is partially the result of the chamber bringing more and more people here.
Shouldn’t there be a meeting of the minds between the chamber representing the business community and the residents desiring a high quality of life. I am not suggesting stopping all the chamber’s efforts, just bringing moderation to those efforts.
Thank you.
