After a number of delays, seventh generation Highlander Angela Lewis Jenkins’ new book “Memories of Highlands’ Early Years” is now available. The 205-page book contains stories of growing up in our quaint little town by 18 story authors.

The stories date as far back as the early 1900’s and are accompanied by photos from Highlands’ early days- with over 250 images included. The book is dedicated in memory of Jenkins’ late parents, Arthur Alan and Jane Anderson Lewis (a sixth generation Highlander), and in honor of her children and grandchildren.

Story authors include Edna Phillips Bryson, Virginia Vinson Bryson, Mary Anne Calloway Creswell, Edna Norton Crisp, Agnes Gibson Crowe, Betty Crawford Fisher, Sarah Hicks Hines, Betty J. Holt, Charles Bobby Houston, Angela Lewis Jenkins, Jane Anderson Lewis, Margaret Mitchell O’Donnell, Beverly Cook Quin, Hazel Edwards Rogers, Anne Reese Wilson, Herman T. Wilson, Kenneth Wilson, and Oliver Earle Young, Jr. Sadly, story authors Edna Phillips Bryson, Agnes Gibson Crowe, and Jane Anderson Lewis have passed away since submitting their stories for inclusion in the book.

“Each story included in the book is truly a treasure- and because these wonderful stories are in print, they will live on for future generations to enjoy,” Jenkins said.

Also featured in the book is an “In Loving Memory” section which features 165 submitted photos of now deceased native and long-time Highlanders.

The 8 ½ x 11 oblong hardcover coffee table book complements Jenkins’ first two coffee table books, Highlands, The Early Years Volumes I and II which have been Highlands “best sellers” since they were published in 2007 and 2012.

Signed copies of the book are available at Mountain Fresh Grocery, The Book Nook, Shakesphere & Company, Acorn’s, Wit’s End, The Dry Sink, Mountain Heritage, The Summer House by Reeves, Highland Hiker, and the Business Spot.

Jenkins is a direct descendant of Barak and Mary Nicholson Norton, early pioneers of the region, who settled in Whiteside Cove around 1820. The family relocated to Highlands soon after its founding in 1875 and has had a continuous presence since that time. Descendants of the family have been very instrumental in the development of Highlands throughout the years. Jenkins’ children and grandchildren, who all live in the Highlands area, represent the family’s eighth and ninth generations.
