The Wobblers, a Clemson based eight-piece band, is set to take the stage at Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park on July 31, for the Saturdays on Pine concert series.
The band got its start as a four-piece band when Evan Dehner and the bands drummer started playing together.
“I knew Patrick from when we were kids,” Dehner said. “We also had another guitar player that played with us, and we were all friends. I moved away at the time but came back and we started playing together just for fun. I didn’t intend on staying here, because I planned on moving to Athens, Ga., but we were having fun playing music and we were starting to play some gigs.”
Once the band started getting their feet wet in the music scene, they were on the lookout for more horn players.
“We ended up getting a gig at an inauguration party, and we sounded really good together,” Dehner said. “We were really excited about it. It was really a dream come true to have a full eight-piece band. So, we kept going with that.”
This is the ninth year that The Wobblers have been traveling around doing shows.
“It’s kind of crazy that we have been doing this for this long,” Dehner said. “Having eight people in the band is kind of like herding cats, but we manage to get everybody to come.”
The band’s genre is a mix of rock and jazz.
“There are a lot of jazz influences in our band because of the horns,” Dehner said. “A lot of the rhythms that we play have heavy jazz influences and we try to reconfigure a lot of songs we play. We have several lead singers and writers, as well. For example, I wrote a song, but our trombone player is the lead singer on it.”
Now that live music is back after the COVID-19 pandemic, Dehner said it is a slow crawl to get back to normal, but it is a natural feeling to be onstage again.
“The big project during the pandemic was recording a three song EP,” Dehner said. “We self-produced, self-recorded all of it. We are all really proud of the product and we hope to have some records to sell at the concert in Highlands.”
Dehner said performing in Highlands and Cashiers is always a delight.
“The crowd in Highlands and Cashiers is always so friendly,” Dehner said. “Anytime we come up here, we know we are always going to have a great show. The show on Saturday should be a shorter one, but we hope to get everybody excited and put on a good show for everyone.”
The Wobblers will take the stage at 6 p.m., in Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park on July 31.
