Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival spotlights the magic of the Harp in the fourth week of its 40th Anniversary Season.
Harpist Bridget Kibbey will be joined onstage with cellist Charae Krueger and flautist Christina Smith for the performance of “The Enchanted Harp” on Friday, July 23, and Saturday, July 24.
Called the “Yo-Yo Ma of the harp,” by Vogue’s Senior Editor Corey Seymour, Kibbey is a winner of a prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, a Salon de Virtuosi SONY Recording Grant, an artist with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and winner of Premiere Prix at the Journées de les Harpes Competition in Arles, France. She quickly gained a reputation for her diverse, energetic programming that spans the baroque, French Masterworks, and rhythmic migration in South America.
According to The New York Times, Kibbey “…makes it seems as though the instrument had been waiting all its life to explode with the energetic figures and gorgeous colors, she was getting from it.”
Ms. Kibbey’s mastery of the harp makes the case for the H-C Chamber Music Festival’s program for Sunday, July 25, and Monday, July 26 – “The Virtuoso Piano,” performed by Michael Gurt.
Michael Gurt is Paula Garvey Manship Distinguished Professor of Piano at Louisiana State University. He won First Prize in the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in 1982 and was a prize winner in international competitions in Pretoria, South Africa, and Sydney, Australia. He has performed as soloist with the Chicago Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Utah Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, the Memphis Symphony, the Capetown Symphony, the China National Symphony Orchestra, and the Natal Philharmonic Orchestra in Durban, South Africa.
Highlands’ concerts are staged Fridays at 6 p.m., and Sundays at 5 p.m., at the Highlands Performing Arts Center at 507 Chestnut Street.
Cashiers’ performances are staged Saturdays and Mondays at 5 p.m., at the Village Green Commons on Frank Allen Road.
