Educational Theatre ready to show off

They say patience is a virtue.

The art of staying calm can be a necessity when dealing with children and young learners.

This week the Highlands Performing Arts Center will host its first Educational Theatre production ever when “Oliver!” takes the stage for a three-day run of shows April 26-28. The performance features actors of all ages, from kindergarten to adult.

Under the watchful eyes of Erik Bishop and Lee Trevathan, the production has come to life while also serving as an outlet for first-time performers. Some are students just getting their first taste of the bright lights, others have some acting experience but maybe haven’t sung before in front of an audience, but they’re all amateurs learning the ropes of acting.

The play, based on the award-winning musical by Lionel Bart and in turn on Charles Dickens’ classic novel, opens Friday, April 26, with a 6 p.m. gala at the PAC followed by the play at 7 p.m. There will be another 7 p.m. performance Saturday, April 27, followed by a 3 p.m. final performance Sunday, April 28.

Community theatre has a storied history in Highlands and the Educational Theatre is the next chapter in that story. Instead of seasoned actors auditioning for roles, and essentially competing against each other, the theatre fosters learning by teaching acting skills and encouraging participants to work together as an ensemble rather than a single star.

“The last thing you want to hear is ‘what part to I have, and how many lines do I have?” Trevathan said. “It’s not really about that. It’s more of a team effort and learning from each other.”

In an era when young people need extracurricular activities and things to do outside of school hours, the Educational Theatre is emerging as a popular outlet. A successful run of performances this weekend will only further that mission.
