Highlands cruises past Summit in double header

With the stretch run of the basketball season getting underway as the calendar turns to February, the Highlands varsity basketball teams got the rare chance to take a breath and suit up for a non-conference game on Thursday night.
“It’s always good to get a win and I thought we played well,” Highlands coach Brett Lamb said. “We are young, and we lack experience, but we are learning and the girls are definitely getting better as a team as the season rolls along.”
Highlands’ girls got the evening started with a convincing 43-19 win over Summit Charter. The Lady Highlanders used a stifling defense to grab a double-digit lead in the first quarter. Staked to a 13-3 advantage, the visitors went cold on the offensive end in the second period but were able to maintain their lead thanks to continued defensive pressure.
Highlands put the game away with an 16-2 run in the third quarter that extended the lead to 37-8.
Jordyn Borino paced the Highlanders with 20 points in the win. Aislynn Wyatt-Luck added eight points and Hunter Connor finished with six.
Highlands (3-14 overall) took on Little Smoky 1-A Conference rival Blue Ridge on Tuesday night. The Highlanders will continue league play on Friday when they pay a visit to Nantahala.
