Local student qualifies for YBR World Finals

Highlands resident, Gus Teeter, will be heading to Abilene Texas for the Youth Bull Riders World Final in August. Teeter, who is now 12 years old, has always had an interest in bull-riding and rodeos.

Funding request for Macon County Library salaries stalled

A Gay Pride display at the Macon County Public Library became an issue during a discussion about extra funding for library staff salaries at the Board of County Commissioners budget session on June 7.

Nature Center Summer Camps in full swing

Highlands is well-known for its proximity to nature, with an elevation of over 4,000 feet, Highlands sits right near the crest of the Blue Ridge, and it is surrounded by multiple other mountain ranges such as the Great Smoky Mountains and the Nantahala.

Holbrooks officially wins sheriff race

Brent Holbrooks will follow in his father’s footsteps in serving Macon County as sheriff. Holbrooks was the top vote getter in the May 17 primary and the recount on June 2 showed he still had the votes to win the race. Holbrooks said he was humbled and blessed to be elected.

Dia Del Niño event to be held Saturday

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cashiers-Highlands will be hosting Día del Niño (Children’s Day), in collaboration with the Boys and Girls Club of the Plateau and the International Friendship Center of Highlands on June 4 at the Cashiers Recreation Center.

‘A place for families’: OEI cuts the ribbon at GlenCove

Old Edwards’ new multi-generation adventure-wellness community, GlenCove by Old Edwards, is now open. The community was created, according to Director of Operations Jerry West, with one simple mindset, to create something for generations.
