Cold temps shift council's focus to home heating aid

The Highlands Emergency Council wrapped what Mary Ann Cresswell, grants, projects and programs coordinator, called a very good holiday season in 2019, but now it’s time to move forward with 2020. “The weather was nice this year,” she said.

Looking forward, giving back

For Highlands resident Ray Such, times could be better, but he’s not complaining.  Recently unemployed, Such, 56, persevered through the holidays by focusing his attention and efforts not on his own plight in life, but instead on helping others through their difficult times.

It’s a new year, a new decade and a new beginning for the Town of Highland and its Board of Commissioners. A new board of commissioners was sworn in on Dec. 12 and with the coming of 2020, commissioners are eager to get to finish some longstanding projects that have been on their collective plate.

The Entegra Bank branch on Carolina Way in Highlands will become a Select Bank branch in 2020, according to a release from First Citizens Bank that was made public on Monday.     First Citizens is in the final stages of completing a merger with Entegra Bank.

There is one fact Highlands resident Brian Stiehler wants to make perfectly clear. This is not a Christmas village. “This has nothing to do with Christmas, though a lot of people think it does,” said the Highlands Commissioner and Golf Course Superintendent at Highlands Country Club.
