Winter weather arrived early in Highlands, as freezing rain and falling temperatures greeted commuters on Tuesday morning.     The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement on Monday afternoon and declared a freeze warning for Highlands and Cashiers from 4 a.m.

    In a race that was too close to officially call as of Wednesday, Highlands appears to have elected Brian Stiehler, John ‘Buz’ Dotson and Marc Hehn to the board of commissioners.     Stiehler, an incumbent, was the leading vote getter with 182 ballots cast in his favor.

Christmas giving underway

The First Baptist Church - Highlands is slated to be the local drop off point for this year’s Operation Christmas Child. The drop off period will begin on Monday, Nov. 18 at 10 a.m. and finish a week later on Nov. 25 at noon.

Local athlete Charlie Ledford made it clear back in June about his intentions when talking about beating his addictions. “I beat this, but I haven’t won anything yet,” he said by phone on Tuesday. “And I’ll never win at this really, I just refuse to lose.
