Rain, snow and windy weather couldn’t stop the Highlands Middle School Lady Highlanders from putting on a dominating performance against the Murphy Middle School Lady Bulldogs last Friday, 4-0. “I was really happy with how they played tonight,” coach Rachel Wilson said.

A child died after being swept away at Whitewater Falls in southern Jackson County on Sunday night. Early Monday morning, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said three-year-old Nevaeh Jade Newswanger was visiting with her family when she fell into the water and was carried over the falls.

For the past five years, The Hudson Library of Highlands, N.C. Inc., library staff and organizations throughout the community have worked together to make several improvements to the library.

With employees harder and harder to come by, the Highlands Town Board of Commissioners is exploring a possible cost of living adjustment for its employees. At a budget meeting on April 7, the town board heard from Town Manager Josh Ward, who said he reviews the Consumer Price Index each year.

A North Carolina appeals court has struck down parts of Wilmington’s short-term rental ordinance that required owners to register their rental properties.

The wins keep flowing in for the Highlands School varsity girl’s soccer team, after a tie against Brevard, 3-3, last Friday and a solid performance against Murphy High School on Monday night, 5-2. “We have to get back to the basics and play like we know how to play,” Head coach Caleb Brown said.
